FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Why do you insist on all Tutors having bonafide degrees and Professional Certificates?

A: As parents ourselves and also former teachers we take education very seriously. As such, we feel that our clients should get the very best in tutoring services. Most of our tutors have had or are currently distinguished educators and they are all dedicated to the student's success.

Q: Does American Tutors Online require a long term contract?

A: No, our services are on an ala carte basis, depending on the progress of each student. Some students only require a few sessions to achieve their education objective, while others are tutored regularly over a longer period. As such, we do not believe in a "one size fits all approach to tutoring". That said, we do offer longer term plans where the cost per session is discounted.

Q: Does American Tutors Online require upfront fees for diagnosis?

A: The American Tutors Online policy is to not require up-front diagnostic tests. We have found that in most cases our Education Directors and Tutors can diagnose the student's deficiency without the need for diagnostic tests - either by observation, parent comments or comments from the student's teachers or counselor. If the Tutor does administer a diagnostic test fees are disclosed and reasonable.

Q: Does American Tutors Online tutor students with learning disabilities?

A: It depends on the nature of the disability. Many of our highly trained Tutors have taught students throughout their careers who have learning disabilities and several of the Tutors are (or were) Special Education teachers. That said, the student must be able to sit by a computer and communicate for an hour session. It's suggested that parents discuss the disability with the Education Director.

Q: Does American Tutors Online provide tutoring services for talented and gifted students?

A: Yes, our staff includes Tutors who have training and experience in Gifted and Talented and during their teaching careers specialized in this important area.

Q: What's the best place for an online tutoring session?

A: Students must be in a quiet location in a place that does not have distractions- coffee shops, for example are not those places! It's best if the student is at home, preferably in their room with the door closed and without pets which potentially cause distractions. Obviously, a computer connected to a broad-band connection is a must.

Q: Do the Tutors communicate with the classroom teachers or student's guidance counselor?

A: Yes, but because of various privacy laws, we require that the parents sign a release giving us permission and that release is available on the website. We believe that it is often quite helpful to communicate with the student's teacher or counselor. We will go the "extra mile" to achieve student success! For more information, please contact us.

Q: If I have documents that I want the Tutor to see during the session, what should I do?

A: It is best if the student or parent scans whatever worksheets or documents that are required BEFORE THE TUTORING SESSION BEGINS so that the tutor does not have to waste valuable tutoring time during the session.

Q: What do I do if I don't have a scanner?

A: If a family does not have a scanner, they should fax it to our administrative center that will then scan it into a document and email it to the tutor. Note: There may be an administrative fee for this service. It is highly suggested that clients get an inexpensive All-in-One Printer with a scanning function so that they can scan their own documents.
